CPI Assumptions Spending Plan

Postby mfmcpherson@shaw.ca » Sat Sep 05, 2015 3:34 pm

On the old app I was able to specify a CPI rate to use for inflation on the spending plan. I don't see where I can do that now (although you can on the additional spending line items). What CPI rate is being used?

By default, the CPI is the historical values from year to year. So far, I haven't implemented a way to manually change the CPI (which really only matters for spending and the "inflation-adjusted" final numbers).

Do you typically put a specific inflation rate in because you believe that the economy will be better/worse than the past? Another way to think of that is that you could add more fees to the equation to simulate a worse economy.

I track historical CPI for my Province which is generally different than the national CPI for Canada and generally for US historical CPI. I also look at my expenses and develop a CPI that is more closely weighted to my actual spending by the various baskets used by Statistics Canada.
