Re: Initial Portfolio balance not reflected in results

I can't view your saved sims, I think only you (and maybe bo_knows) can. But I used defaults, ran a single cycle for 1995, and downloaded the spreadsheet. I think everything looks fine. The graph is showing year end values, and I think this is the source of your confusion. For example. 1995 starts a...

Re: Initial Portfolio balance not reflected in results

Is that just a reflection of a positive market (growth is larger than any withdraws)?

That's common, and I think what you are seeing is not the "starting portfolio" but the portfolio at the end of the first year.

Social Security and Deflation?

I'm curious if this is handled properly in cFIREsim? A post over at ER-org questioned it in FIRECalc - supposedly, SS is never adjusted down for deflation , and he thinks FIRECalc is making the adjustment. I don't know if SS tracks the deflation, and only adjusts up after the deflation has been offs...

Re: investment portfolio

Check to see if you are at the default zoom level on your browser, and that your window is at full width. I think I've seen some of these boxes act 'funny' if they are scrunched down.

Re: Thoughts on negative portfolio amounts?

Yes, I think that for a portfolio below zero, only expenses and inflation adjustments should be made. As you say, thus gives a good picture of how many "years worth of expenses" you were short. -ERD50 Seeing a negative number never made any sense to me. I agree that your proposal is bette...

Re: Thoughts on negative portfolio amounts?

... If I do it the way I propose, which is to only take expenses out of the portfolio if it drops below $0 (and totally ignore market gain), then you'll be able to quickly determine how many "years worth of expenses" you were short. Yes, I think that for a portfolio below zero, only expen...

Re: User Interface design

I know I'm late to this, and have not read every word above, but after a quick review, I have a few minor suggestions: A) If you'd like to reduce vertical space a bit more, I noticed there is white space in the 'Spending Plan" section. Consider combining this with "Basic Stats"? There...

Re: Current Work in Progress

I have not had a chance to go into it in detail, but I have to say I REALLY like the new look. It's funny, it doesn't seem all that different from what you had in terms of basic layout, but the block style, fonts and shading must make the difference. It really looks a lot cleaner and more modern. I ...

Re: Thoughts on negative portfolio amounts?

I think we had a discussion on this earlier - I agree that the negative portfolios are 'phony', but I think it still has some value to see just how 'bad' that failure was. You might do somw teaks to the entries, and see a -$300K go to -$100K. That is an improvement that you would not see if negative...

Re: Stats layout idea

That's cool, but I still want to see the actual years that had lows/dips. That allows you to do a single year run, and see the line w/o all the other distracting lines. It's also much faster.
